Coronado, meaning "Crowned" in Spanish, is a resort city in San Diego County, California, located across San Diego Bay from downtown San Diego. Established in the 1880s and incorporated in 1890, Coronado had a population of 20,192 in 2020. This island city is connected to the mainland by a sandy isthmus known as the Silver Strand. The explorer Sebastian Vizcaino named Coronado and created its first map in 1602. The name "Coronado" translates to "crowned," earning it the nickname "The Crown City." The name is derived from the Coronado Islands, a Mexican offshore archipelago. Three U.S. Navy ships have been named in its honor, including the USS Coronado.

Frank Baum, the author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," could have seen the hotel from his home overlooking Star Park and even designed the crown chandeliers in its dining room.
