Point Loma is a picturesque seaside community in San Diego, California. Geographically, it is a hilly peninsula bordered to the west and south by the Pacific Ocean, to the east by San Diego Bay and Old Town, and to the north by the San Diego River. Together with the Silver Strand/Coronado peninsula, Point Loma defines San Diego Bay and separates it from the Pacific Ocean. The name "Point Loma" refers to both the neighborhood and the peninsula. As of the 2010 Census, Point Loma has an estimated population of 47,981, which includes Ocean Beach. The Peninsula Planning Area encompasses most of Point Loma, covering approximately 4,400 acres.
One of the most recognizable landmarks in Point Loma is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which is often used to symbolize the city of San Diego. Although sometimes mistakenly called the "Old Spanish Lighthouse," it was constructed after California became part of the United States.
In addition to the lighthouse, Point Loma is home to five other sites on the National Register of Historic Places: Cabrillo National Monument, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Historic District, Naval Training Center San Diego, and Rosecroft.

Point Loma is recognized as a National Landmark of Soaring by the National Soaring Museum due to the numerous record flights that occurred along its promontory. Two plaques commemorating these achievements can be found near the entrance to Cabrillo National Monument.
Marine activities are primarily located on the Bay (eastern) side of the peninsula, which features three yacht clubs, including the San Diego Yacht Club, known for hosting the America's Cup from 1988 to 1995. The Bay side is home to several small-boat marinas and a commercial dock that services sport fishing cruises and seasonal whale-watching tours. Point Loma boasts the largest sport fishing fleet in Southern California, along with various businesses related to yachting and fishing, including marine supply stores, yacht brokerages, boat repair yards, and hotels catering to fishing enthusiasts.
