Kensington is a neighborhood in San Diego, California, bordered by Interstate 15 to the west, Interstate 8 to the north, Fairmount Avenue to the east, and El Cajon Boulevard to the south. It is adjacent to the communities of Normal Heights to the west and City Heights to the south. Kensington is located within San Diego's City Council District 9 and is part of California's 53rd congressional district, represented by Democrat Sara Jacobs. Following redistricting, it will be moved into the 51st district after the 2022 election.
History
Founded in 1910, Kensington's development began with a map filed on April 9, 1910, by sisters Abby (Hall) Hitchcock and Mary (Hall) Gleason, who inherited the land from their deceased brother and mother. Abby's husband, a realtor, and her brother-in-law, a land use attorney, facilitated connections that led to the involvement of William Douglas, a Los Angeles-based real estate promoter. Douglas helped promote the subdivision and manage the initial lot sales. The opening of the Kensington Park subdivision was announced in a newspaper on November 25, 1910, coinciding with the extension of the Adams Avenue trolley line into the area. The first homes, built in the Craftsman style, were constructed later that year. The original Kensington Park area stretched from Ward Canyon (now SR-15) to County Line Road (now 42nd Street) and from Monroe Avenue (now Jefferson Avenue) to the north. Kensington Park became part of San Diego in 1952.
In 1913, the Hall sisters sold their interest in the land to a group of former Santa Fe Railway executives, led by G. Aubrey Davidson. Davidson expanded the area northward to develop Kensington Manor, followed by additional subdivisions like Kensington Heights and Kensington Park Annex. These areas are now collectively referred to as Kensington.
Streetcar service, originally provided by the San Diego Electric Railway (SDERy) via a wooden trestle bridge across Ward Canyon, began in 1910. In 1913, a second bridge was built to accommodate automobile access. The service, which included notable streetcar designs such as the San Diego Class 1 and the Presidents' Conference Committee model, continued until 1949 when San Diego's streetcar lines were abandoned.
The neighborhood’s name, Kensington, is thought to be inspired by a district in West London, though the Hall sisters were from Natick, Massachusetts, where many place names resemble those in England. Kensington has retained its small-town charm with annual events like the Memorial Day Parade and the Fourth of July Block Party/Street Basketball Tournament, along with neighborhood-specific parties on various streets.
A neon "Kensington" sign hangs over Adams Avenue, the neighborhood's cultural and business hub. Installed in 1953 by the community, the sign was nearly lost to disrepair but was designated a historic site by San Diego's Historical Resources Board in 2008. After a brief dismantling, the sign was restored and reinstalled in 2010.
Kensington is known for its collection of Spanish Revival-style homes, built during the 1920s, and the influence of architects like Cliff May and Richard Requa, who significantly shaped the neighborhood's architectural character. Although not officially recognized as one, Kensington is sometimes grouped with the nearby Talmadge area, often to reflect higher real estate values.
